Question

For a driver doing average mileage, but planning to keep the car for a few years, would you recommend a BMW 3.20d or BMW 3.20i, given the increasing price differential between diesel and petrol?
 

Answer

If you are buying new then I would recommend buying a nearly new 320 diesel. If you are buying used then I would recommend a 2 or 3 year old 320i petrol.

Sorry if that’s confusing.

But it’s the right advice in that if you are buying new, you will lose less in depreciation when you go to sell the car if it’s a diesel. But if you are buying used, by buying petrol you are benefiting from the other clown who bought a new petrol and has watched the value drop. Plus you get cheaper fuel and a smoother drive…
