Question

Hi Matt,

I am looking at buying one of these (new shape 53 plate) which is up for 9k which seems reasonable but, it has 109,000 miles on the clock. It has a full service history so no worries there, but not being an expert in these matters I wonder if there is anything to look out for in high mile diesel BMW's. I haven’t found anything to worry me on Parkers or What Car and wondered if you could advise?

Many thanks in anticipation of your reply.
Cheers

Dave Mole, UK

Answer

Hi Dave,

I’m sorry but if you pasted in a picture or link, it seems to have been lost in the system...

109,000 miles in 5 and a half years? For £9,0000. What car could it be?

I could get you a 3-Series or a 5-Series with half that mileage (i.e. nearer the real average) for up to £2,000 less.

I’m guessing you are looking at either a 7-Series because the X5 (which is my second guess) didn’t come out in 03. If you shop around you should find 730ds for £10-£13,000 with 69,000 average miles on the clock. So this car is priced correctly when adjusted for mileage, but I would shop around. It’s no bargain.

Despite what your other research may show, according to UsedCarExpert.co.uk there are 11 common faults or wear items to check it for, including:

What to look for
1) throughout the test drive, keep a close eye on all the electronic readings and devices. The car has had many software updates to fix sporadic and varied electronic faults. 2) Contact a dealer, read the car's VIN number to them and ask if there are any outstanding updates.
What it means (if you find this fault)
If there are any electronic faults or outstanding updates, the car needs a diagnostics test and software update from a specialist or main dealer.
What to do (your options)

Have the car examined before buying. A diagnostics check can cost up to £200.
