Hi
I am looking to buy either a MK 5 Golf GTI or BMW 320 coupe diesel M Sport for about £15,000-£16,000.
I do quite a few miles (about 15,000 a year) so was veering towards the BMW. However I am worried this car will depreciate in value a lot more than the Golf due to it being superseeded by the new shape.
I intend to keep the car about 3 years. Any advice would be most helpfull ? Regards John
Answer
Hi John,
The Golf you are thinking of buying must be about one year old. The average mileage at that age is about 8 - 10,000 miles per year and the deprecation will probably be around 14% and 22% over the next two years.
The best BMW you can afford will need to be more like 2 years old and will probably lose 30% then 10% each year after that. So you could buy a 3 year old and reduce the depreciation, or the Golf will be the better bet.
