Question

Hi

I was pulled over by a policeman last night, knowing I hadn't done anything wrong I was a little concerned. He pulled me over because he was an MG owner and was interested in my registration plate!

I drive a BMW 325i Sport E30 model, my registration number is G46 MGF. The policeman told me my plate was worth around £9,000-£10,000; I thought it best to check with someone in the know.

He told me to check out the MG owners website to be sure, which I did but there was not much to go on regarding registration plates. If you could give me an idea of what my plate may be worth, I'd be grateful.

Thank you so much,
Sandra

Answer

Hi Sandra

The private number plate market is not an easy place to make money. There is more supply than demand with a range of cheap number plates (for under £300) that still look good to most.

What's more, the DVLA release more every year.

We do know enthusiasts, who by holding on to number plates for over 10 years, turn a profit. But they are rare and most people end up either losing a little money when needing to sell their plate, or keeping it forever.

Sorry to disappoint you, but based on current market trends, Reg Transfers believe that the value of your number plate is about £800.

It seems the boys in blue should stick to their day jobs!!
