BMW 1-Series
Co2: 18-224
It feels a lot like a BMW 3-Series to drive. But it is cramped and impractical in comparison to Audi and Mercedes' entry-level cars because its more like a car and less like a bubble. Which makes it the only alternative for some.
Best used eco buy: 116d
Prices: BMW 1-series prices start at about £7,000 (or just under for a high miler). Depreciation is under 10% most years, but around the time of M.O.T. it loses a chunk, and suffers a bit of a hangover. So the nearly new buyer should sell before the 3rd birthday and the bargain hunter buy a 4 year old.

Peugeot 308
Co2: 120-192
An improvement on the very similar 307 in every way: Quality, ride, handling. But it looks fatter as a result.
Best used eco buy: 1.6 HDi
Prices: 2007 cars start at £8,500 and have under 30,000 miles on average. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of 1.6HDis in the used market, so you can be picky. Be warned these cars will lose big chunks every year until just after their M.O.T. when they will be a bargain for someone else.
