BMW is adding an all-new compact model to its X range in the shape of the X1.
The first premium compact SUV to hit the market, the X1 also marks another first for the manufacturer as it is the only model offering an engine line-up that is exclusively diesel.
It has been designed as a more rugged alternative to the 3-Series Touring and sits on the same platform as the estate.
The X1 is a handsome vehicle with a blend of boxy off-roader and curvy coupe lines. It shares styling cues with its larger siblings and features short overhangs, and squared-off wheel arches. Its low roofline and long bonnet give it a modern look.
As you would expect from BMW, the interior is well crafted with quality materials and you enjoy excellent vision from what the manufacturer dubs the semi-command position.
There is plenty of room for five adults to sit in comfort and there is also generous luggage space. With the rear seats folded the load area offers 1,350-litres.
Power is supplied by one 2.0-litre four cylinder diesel tuned to three different outputs. The choice is a 141bhp 18d, a 175bhp 20d and a 204bhp 23d which features twin-turbochargers.
To complicate choice even further, the X1 can be ordered in sDrive or xdrive. sDrive cars are rear-wheel-drive only and as a result are a considerable 85kg lighter. XDrives are 4WD and carry a £1,305 premium.
The sDrive18d unit is probably going to be a big seller and it is capable of a top speed of 124mph and combined fuel consumption of 54.3mpg.
The middle 177bhp sDrive20d model offers a sprint time of 0-62mph in just 8.1 seconds and a 127mph top speed. It can also deliver a combined figure of 53.3mpg.
Launch cars were all flagship XDrive23d models with 201bhp on tap and they certainly impressed. Performance is every bit as good as the figures suggest.
The clever four-wheel-drive system allowed for safe and quick progress over some of Scotland's most challenging roads even in torrential rain.
It handled all kinds of surfaces with ease and the X1 really comes alive when you push it hard. The steering has plenty of feel and it challenges you to explore the tremendous grip on offer.
Body roll is kept in check by the excellent suspension and the X1 is a first class long distance companion.
It will appeal both to those who want a sporty lifestyle and to customers who want a large estate.
Rivals include the VW Tiguan, the Ford Kuga and Toyota Rav but BMW know that they will face tougher competiton when the Audi Q3 and the Range Rover LRX arrive.
Prices start at £22,660 and rise to £29,055 for the flagship model but you must remember that you can easily add another £10,000 by dipping into the must-have options list.
I also expect the X to take sales away from the company's own X3 which is due for replacement any time soon.
