New small 4x4 from BMW - BMW X1 Car Review

BMW has just announced a yet smaller 4x4 called the X1 that will be available in both two and four wheel drive.

It will come with the stop/start fitted to other models for improved economy as part of the company's Efficient Dynamics scheme.

The new model takes styling cues from the big X5 but puts them in a more affordable package.

Power comes from a choice of three versions of the 2.0-litre diesel already used across the BMW range, with outputs of 143, 177 or twin turbo 204bhp.

Even the lowliest 18d will sprint to 60 in 9.6 seconds and go on to a top speed of 124mph in two-wheel-drive form and yet it will also do 54mpg and emits only 136g/km of CO2.

Most X1s will have a six-speed manual gearbox but buyers of the top 23d get a six-speed Sport automatic with gear change paddles on the column. The X1 launches in October.

Interior

The new SUV has elegant lines and a commanding driving position and it's a full five seater with enough luggage space for them all.

All the main controls and dashboard displays are angled towards the driver and there is plenty of storage.
