Here's an example fault on the BMW X3 (2007-)
What to look for:
Open the bonnet while the engine is running and listen for a graunching or a ‘ball bearing’ noise from the top of the engine.
What it means:
The seal on the turbocharger has blown. This is more common on early models.
What to do
If the car is at a main dealer (or still under warranty – 3 years/60,000 miles) this should be done under warranty. Otherwise have the car inspected by a professional mechanic as to replace the turbo could cost £1500.00.
