AN EXTRA 's' will mean a lot when it makes the badge on the back of the BMW Z4 even longer.

The additional designation stands for yet more brawn under the bonnet of the new sDrive35is version.

Due to make its debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January before going on sale in March, the latest Z4 gains an extra 34bhp over the standard car to take output to 340bhp.

The little 's' also means an extra temporary boost in turbo pressure is on tap so overtaking manoeuvres take even less time in the three-litre, twin turbocharged car.

With seven-speed double clutch transmission as standard, maximum use can be made of the higher performance and gearshift response times have been accelerated for a more sporting gear change compared to the existing transmission.

Adaptive M Sport suspension gives a 10mm lower ride height than the standard Z4 and comes with variable damper control for enhanced ride characteristics.

However, the car's most distinctive feature is the bespoke M aerodynamic body styling package, with a revised front spoiler configuration and contrasting matt aluminium trim in the side air intakes giving more aggressive looks. Specially designed18-inch light alloy wheels are fitted and at the rear, a dual section diffuser with an anthracite insert differentiates the car from standard Z4s.

The extra power results in an improved zero to 62mph time of 4.8 seconds, down 0.3 seconds from the current Z4 sDrive35i, while top speed is limited to 155mph. Economy and emission figures are unchanged at 31.4mpg and 210g/km CO2. Price: £43,885.
