THE BMW Z4 is a far better car than the Z3 it replaced with sharp handling and a good ride along with exhilarating performance.
It also looks the business to my eye, although the shape of the original is not liked by all. A new model is on the way which has addressed some of the criticisms.
Engines in the Mk 1 versions are 2.0-litre four, and 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0-litre six cylinder units, with power outputs ranging from 150 to 261bhp.
All are smooth and powerful in the BMW tradition, but if you can run to the six cylinder models, you have more performance and a wonderful sound.
It responds quickly to the wheel and feels very predictable and safe through corners at speed.
This is perfect if you like twisty roads but the Z4 is also very calm and composed on motorways.
Smaller engines seem to make the car feel more nimble, and the best overall is the 2.5, giving a good compromise between power and handling.
The SE and most other models ride well but Sport models, with larger wheels and sports suspension, feel fidgety on rough surfaces.
Interior
The quick electric roof retracts in just a few seconds and insulation is good, keeping much noise out at speed.
The boot is surprisingly big but lower order models don't have as much kit as you would expect for the original price.
