Chrysler 300C Touring 3.0 V6 CRD SRT-Design - Chrysler 300C Car Review

LIKE many imports from our American cousins, Chrysler's huge flagship is bold, brash and huge.

However unlike many American imports, the big limo has struck a chord with the British car buying public who do not normally take to so-called 'Yank tanks.'

It's easy to see why. This Chrysler is no barge on wheels and offers bold and daring styling, fantastic equipment levels, residual Mercedes technology and a bit of the 'oomph' factor.

And it sells well. Simon Elliott, Managing Director of Chrysler UK Ltd, said: "We have sold more than 6,000 cars since the launch in 2005 and this means the 300C has been a huge success story for Chrysler in the UK."

My test car impressed all ages, from young children to my mother, aged 88, who described it as a floating living room.

In fact, it seems to have as much space as your average living room.

The 300C has been subtly revamped for 2008 with a revised exterior and an updated interior across the range.

Changes include revisions to the rear fascia and rear light clusters and the interior sees a new instrument panel and centre console design, highlighted with satin silver bezels.

In place of some of the harsh, but hard wearing plastics associated with American cars, the 300C now has soft touch surfaces on arm rests and door panels.

Other changes include a new ignition key with one-touch start-up, a fully adjustable steering wheel as well as LED lighting in the front cup holders and front and rear door pockets.

If the exterior is one of the most visually-striking on the road, the interior is both huge and plush with virtually every refinement imaginable including heated and air conditioned leather seats, climate control, electric windows and door mirrors, electric sunroof, cruise control rain sensing wipers and parking sensors.

Also standard are an impressive sound system with sat nav, central locking, alarm and immobiliser.

On the road the big car is smooth and refined, powered by a Mercedes-sourced three litre 215bhp V6 diesel engine that packs plenty of power but is relatively frugal even when mated to the five speed auto gearbox.

It is also surprisingly quiet, so the Tourer is a comfortable cruiser which also handles pretty well for such a big car thanks to steering, suspension calibration and wheel and tyre set-up that is adapted towards higher speed ride and handling on European roads.

Standard safety features include front, side and seat airbags, plus curtain airbags for rear passengers. Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with traction control and anti-lock brakes add to the stability of the car.

As you would expect this big car is very roomy and with the rear seats occupied, the load area holds 630 litres of cargo. Fold the rear seats down and capacity is increased to 1,602 litres

The boot area can also be split and sectioned to carry different loads.

To supplement its impressive safety features the 300C boasts a Chrysler Group safety 'first' of one-touch close of power windows and sunroofs that includes a new, auto-reverse sensing system which automatically engages and reverses the window to help prevent injuries, especially to children.
