Chrysler Neon R/T - Chrysler Neon Car Review

Review

WHEN first introduced into the UK in 1996, the unusual Chrysler Neon saloon's proud boast was that it provided two-litre motoring for the price of a 1.6.

Since then, the Neon has been updated with a livelier two-litre engine and the dated frameless windows have given way to solid framed structures which give the car a much more European look.

To give the range an extra boost, Chrysler has introduced a more powerful range-topping R/T model which whacks out a respectable 150 bhp.

This is the model with which Chrysler hopes to extend the interest in the Neon to a younger market sector in the UK. In the past young people in the USA loved the Neon, whereas in the UK it became a darling of the older driver.

The manual transmission only R/T is powered by the two-litre high output four cylinder engine, and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 9.6 seconds and reach a top speed, where permissible, of 132 mph.

But it still boasts impressive fuel economy with 44.1 mpg on the urban cycle and 34.9 mpg combined.

Priced at £13,995 the two-litre Neon R/T is still excellent value when compared to some European 1.6s. It comes from the same stable as the awesome Viper sports car and is part of the new era of Chrysler sporting derivatives. It is striking in appearance with a large rear spoiler and 16 inch alloy wheels.

A generous list of equipment includes dark slate leather seats, four-disc in-dash CD changer, tipped exhausts and some very positive performance badging.

It does feel very American. And I do feel that the rather dead feeling to the steering does not do justice to the car's performance capabilities. Ride is just too harsh and rear accommodation is still not up to Euro standards. But if you are interested in a lively car on a budget, the the Neon R/T is worth investigating.

I am beginning to see more and more Neons on the road, a fact possibly aided by one of the most comprehensive warranty and after sales programmes currently available. As well as a three year/ 60,000 mile mechanical warranty, the R/T comes with Chrysler Assistance offering three years roadside assistance and six years anti-corrosion warranty.
