Citroen C8 2.2Hdi SX - Citroen C8 Car Review

FROM the retractable mirrors to the automatic sliding doors, Citroen's C8 has something for every techno-freak.

Perhaps a bit too much. The number of gadgets and gizmos on this latest generation of people mover is daunting to say the least.

Getting to grips with the complexities of this vehicle can be a tussle with the unexpected at times.

Why do the windows open as you approach the car, having unlocked it at several paces via the remote control key fob? Well the answer is because you told it to - but perhaps not wittingly.

If you fail to notice the indicators wink in recognition of the unlock signal and you keep pressing the key fob button that is just what happens. It's one press to unlock, three to drop the windows.

Even that key fob is a formidable piece of kit. It is a nerve centre on its own - and it's not exactly pocket size.

But once you become au fait with the many features of the C8 it really is quite impressive.

That remote control unlocking system enables you to open the sliding middle doors as you walk up to the vehicle and walk straight in - or offload the shopping bags from a more practical point of view.

Then the doors can be closed just as easily in a variety of fashions - another press on the key fob, a touch of a button on the door pillar or just slide the door forward and the electric motors do the rest. And there is a safety device to stop the door in its tracks if it meets any resistance - such as a youngster's arm.

The C8 is one of a family of three new people movers developed by Citroen, its sister company Peugeot and Italian manufacturer Fiat. This is the same tie up that produced the Citroen Synergie, Peugeot 806 and the Fiat Ulysee.

Basically all versions of the new vehicle are the same with each manufacturer adding its own level of specification - and Citroen has gone for plenty.

That is reflected in the price which ranges from £18,000 to £26,000 with this particular SX model sitting in the middle at £22,300.

Inside the C8 is roomier than its predecessor with all seven seats now being adjustable for reach and rake. Foldaway picnic tables are mounted on the backs of the front seats and the centre-middle seat can be folded flat to make a table. All seven seats include cross-over seatbelts and head restraints, and each is sculptured to fit comfortably.

With the handbrake to the right of the driver's seat and the gear lever on the facia, the front floor area is uncluttered making it possible to move around the cabin when the vehicle is stationary. However, many a large people mover has been like that and the Citroen's real strong point is its use of technology.

Automatic headlamps, auto wipers, a trip computer and climate control are all standard on this C8 - and the rear passengers have their own controls for the air conditioning.

The car is fitted with electric sunroofs and there is even a secondary rear view mirror that folds out of the headlining so that the people in the front can keep an eye on those in the rear.

There is a futuristic feel to the instrument panel with the round dials centrally placed. They are coloured a luminescent blue during the day and green when lit up at night and at first they look odd, but they grow on you. In front of the driver on top of the steering wheel is a small binnacle which is where you will find the warning lights and mileometer.

Interior storage space abounds. Compartments hidden in the dash come with partitions inside to take keys, pens, notepads and the like while there are huge bins in the doors that incorporate bottle holders. Under-seat trays are also provided for more bits and pieces.

Under the bonnet of this particular C8 was PSA's wonderful 2.2Hdi diesel and that produces all the performance you need from a people mover with splendid fuel economy. Top speed is a reported 113mph, 0 to 60mph takes 13.6 seconds, it will average almost 40 to the gallon and has CO2 emissions rated at 199g/km.

For a car that can carry seven, that is excellent in anybody's book and it tops off the C8 perfectly.
