DAEWOO'S new Kalos five-door family hatchback range is given a significant boost with the addition of two new engines to the line up.

A sprightly new 1.2 litre four-cylinder joins the range at entry level in the Kalos 1.2S and SE, and there is also a 16-valve version of the existing 1.4 litre engine, developing 94Ps, called the 1.4SX 16v.

The 16-valve engine also comes with an option new to the Kalos range, in the form of a four-speed automatic transmission. Coupled only to the 16-valve engine, the auto version has a 0-60mph acceleration time in 12 seconds and a top speed of 105mph.

Along with the existing 1.4 8-valve SE and SX models, the Kalos range now has five versions, with each offering twin front airbags, three point seat belts at all five positions, power assisted steering, ABS, central door locking, height adjustable driver's seat and electric front windows.

The new 1.2-litre engine develops 72Ps and 104Nm of torque, giving a 0-60mph time of 13.7 seconds and a top speed of 98mph.

Fuel economy is 43 mpg on the combined cycle.

The Kalos S is priced at £7,495 and the SE at £7,795. The new entry-level S model includes driver and passenger airbags, ABS, power assisted steering and central door locking, with the SE adding side airbags, keyless entry system, heated door mirrors with electric operation of the passenger door mirror, and a rev counter.

The £8,995 top of the range 1.4SX 16-valve model comes as standard with air-conditioning, 14-inch alloy wheels, a rear roof spoiler, front fog lamps, power rear windows, metallic grain finish on the fascia, fabric door trim inserts and driver's seat back picnic table.

The Kalos 1.4SE and SX 8 valve models continue to be available at £7,795 and £8,395 respectively.

A new feature is that the free servicing is transferable to a subsequent owner should the vehicle be sold within the three-year period.
