FERRARI stylists, Fiat prices and fine handling honed on UK roads make up the new Daewoo Nubira saloon.
The first of a new generation of C-segment cars, the Nubira Saloon is designed by Pininfarina to appeal to the "smart shopper", who doesn't necessarily want the cheapest car but values the overall package and dealer care.
Initially to be sold as a 1.6 or 1.8 saloon, it will eventually be joined by a five-door hatchback and an estate, but a diesel is still some way off. Automatic is on the bigger engine only.
The entry level model tested here is a fine introduction to the marque, particularly for those buying with their own money.
It includes front and side airbags for driver and passenger, air conditioning, alloy wheels, power windows all round, remote control central locking, a remote release for the boot, height-adjustable driver's seat, adjustable steering wheel angle, electrically operated door mirrors, six-speaker audio system and leather covered steering wheel and gear knob - and even a cooled section in the glove box.
The 1.6 litre engine is a good starter and pulls easily, but it's not the quietest in class, particularly at higher revolutions.
The gearbox is very precise and direct, with a smooth change action and light clutch, the ratios give good acceleration but not particularly composed high speed cruising.
The powertrain shows it has been well matched, with a good economy achieved without really trying.
Brakes are good and steering well weighted and balanced.
I liked the slightly firm suspension which still manages to soak up most bumps without a problem, and which still gives good feedback, although again it suffers from a lot of suspension bump-thump and road noise.
The secondary controls are all well laid out, the air conditioning works well and the instruments are simple and clear.
Oddments space is useful, the boot quite large, and access to the cabin is easy, but a little tight in the back for anyone over 5ft 10in. Seats are comfortable.
Visibility is good, particularly the bright lights, and it can be slipped into the tightest space in town.
It is not a sporting saloon, but easily keeps up with the traffic, and you do not have to use a light foot to achieve good returns. Handling is safe and sure.
It is distinctively styled, well made, and does nothing badly but a lot very well, and it has an extremely good after sales package for buyers.
The only item missing from the features list is a pair of earplugs.
