A DAEWOO with a telly in it? You must have been to Currys! How cruel can some people be?
Well, I kid you not, this top of the range Daewoo Tacuma came complete with a foldaway Sony TV and games system fitted into the roof. Which I suppose is why this version of the Tacuma is called the CDX Playstation.
At £16,000 it may not appear to be living up to Daewoo's reputation of exceptional value for money - but then try to think of another car with such kit at such a price.
The Tacuma is Daewoo's take on cars like the Renault Scenic and the Korean product comes in basic trim at under £11,000.
Restyled for 2004, with a new front end and some body mouldings, it now looks quite like the original trend setting Scenic as well.
On the face of it the Tacuma appears to be a compelling buy. The CDX, with two-litre engine, is priced from £12,995 and that is backed up with Daewoo's after care package of three years trouble-free motoring. That includes servicing, warranty, AA recovery and an advanced driving course to help you get the most out of motoring.
An automatic gearbox fitted to this car added £875 to the price and the Sony system pushed it up a further £2,150.
It is roomy, well appointed, air conditioned and has all the trappings of mini people movers such as foldaway picnic tables, under-floor and under-seat storage areas and plenty of cargo space - anything from 12 to 65 cubic feet to be precise.
Twin airbags, ABS with brakeforce distribution, armrests front and back and steering wheel mounted remote controls for the audio system are also part of the package.
But attention to detail lets it down. That TV and DVD system may sound great for keeping the kids happy - but the screen folds down to obscure the rear view mirror.
The screen mounting on this car also appeared not exactly up to the job with a large crack developing on one side.
Rear seat passengers complained of a lack of support from the seats - although head and leg room itself was not a problem.
On the road it is best described as average. The four speed auto box can be switched to a sport mode and also has a "hold" facility to lock the gear but it labours when fully laden and hunts on hills.
Fuel consumption at 26.2mpg on average means it is fairly thirsty and CO2 emissions of 265g/km make it one of the least environmentally friendly cars and ridiculously putsit in the highest of tax brackets for business users.
Handling is also questionable especially with any more than one passenger on board when there is a noticeable wallow through bends. This car also had an unnerving graunch emanating from the front suspension if it went over anything more uneven than a manhole cover.
Now Tacuma is an Afrikaans word meaning joyful lifestyle - and that is just what mini MPVs are all about. Certainly the Daewoo has the right image but its real qualities leave it lagging behind.
The latest generation of people movers from other manufacturers are streets ahead and although the Daewoo can save you money it is simply not as accomplished as its counterparts.
