What to look for:
Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. On most engines the cam belt must be changed within 6 years or 72,000 miles. Some garages recommend changing it at 40,000 miles to be safe.
What it means:
If the cam belt and associated parts (such as the tensioner pulleys) have not been changed, and the mileage is over these boundaries, the cam belt is likely to fail soon and will cause expensive damage to the engine. Usually the engine has to be replaced or at least re-built.
What to do
Ensure that the cam belt is changed before the car is driven anywhere if it is coming close to its interval. Changing the belt will cost £150 (Except on 2.0 155 bhp engine, which costs £800- £1,000)

What to look for:
Open the bonnet and check the level of coolant in the reservoir. It should be between the two markers. Look for sign of ‘furring’ (a pink ‘fur’ deposit) around the area behind the radiator. Also check for evidence of the car running hot during the test drive.
What it means:
Low coolant can mean a problem with the water pump. This will need to be replaced. If the car has covered over 40,000 miles then it is advised to have the timing belt service carried out at the same time.
What to do
If you find this fault then try to negotiate a discount of £450 or, if the car is under warranty (2 years manufacturer/1 year dealer) Fiat may replace the part for free.
