Question

Hello,

With ANOTHER baby on the way, I’m going to need a bigger car. I have between £3000 and £4000 and need something that’s going to last at least two years. I've gone off the idea of a Zafira due to the arrangement of the baby seats. I was thinking of an Almera Tino or maybe a Grand scenic. My priorities are the ability to fit 3 car seats, and to be accessible, I need decent boot space (with the rear seats in place!) and decent mpg as I do a 500 mile round trip maybe once a month. I plan to have it 2 to 3 years max till I can save for something new, so I’m unconcerned about cosmetics, just as long as it needs nothing more than a bit of oil now and then.
Cheers,

Answer

Hello,

The problem of decent boot space in a 7 seat MPV is a thorny one. On the budget you have you can get something pretty decent that should last more than a couple of years. We’d recommend the usual suspects. You can get a manual, diesel Grand Espace (which will give you tolerable fuel economy) for around £3500 but the mileage will be high. Consider also the Chrysler Grand Voyager – similar money gets you an 8 year old 2.5 diesel with slighty lower (around 85,000 miles) mileage. Also think about the Citroen C8 and Peugeot 806 which cost the same money and will have the same miles. We strongly recommend the Fiat Multipla though. If you can see past the looks the car makes utter sense for you as it’s very wide and both the front row of seats, and the rear have three full size seats. That means that two people can sit in the front as well as the driver. It’s an odd arrangement (which didn’t stop Honda copying it for the F-RV) but it’s highly effective and leaves room for huge boot. It handles/rides well and is very good on fuel with the 1.9 JTD-M diesel unit. It’s also MUCH cheaper to buy than the 7 seat MPVs as the idea never really caught on…
