Make & Model: Fiat Panda 1980
Type: Three-door Hatchback
Production from 1980-1994
IN 1979 Fiat turned its traditional small-car concept back-to-front for the newest of ultra-economical models for the 1980s.
And the Italian firm moved away from the usual number system of identifying cars to call this front-engined, front-wheel-drive baby the Panda.
It was 10 inches longer than the rear-engined Fiat 126 city car but used the same engine - an air-cooled 650cc for domestic Italian models- plus a water-cooled 903cc engine which was fitted to the export models in autumn, 1980.
The Panda featured was very similar in concept and shape to the Bertone-styled Innocenti Mini which was made in Italy. Despite its compact length (11ft) the Panda could carry five adults - although they would be a bit cramped! The rear seat could be folded flat or removed to provide extra cargo space - essential for any three-door car.
Technically the Panda was considered advanced for its time and size. It had front disc brakes and a rigid rear axle. The 30 bhp version gave 53.6 mpg at 56 mph and the 45 bhp Panda returned 48 mpg at the same speed.Top speed for the little-engined version was 71 mph and the 903cc model would do almost 90 mph.
The price when it went on sale in the UK was £2,700.
