Here's an example fault on the FIAT Qubo (2009 - present)
What to look for:
During the test drive, check to see if there is a hot, oily smell in the cabin. If you find this, where safe, ask the vendor if, you can remove the engine cover. When you do so, check the breather pipe (which is at the top of the engine, at the back, and is a large black rubber pipe) for signs of splitting.
What it means:
The breather pipe can split allowing fumes to escape, which you can smell in the cabin
What to do
If the car is under warranty (3 years or 100,000 miles) Fiat may replace this part without charge. Otherwise try to negotiate a discount of £100.00 off of the price of the vehicle.
