Dear Matt
I want to buy a new or nearly new car for my 23 year old daughter who will have a low income and as a conservationist her priorities include
- High mpg
- Green
- Some warranty time left
There are some very good deals for new cars around and I was hoping to stay within £6000 - especially now we are into March
She likes the Renault Clio but fuel consumption isn't brilliant.
Others I have looked at include Fiat Panda, Toyota Aygo or Yaris, VW Polo, Peugeot etc
I want the car to be safe on the motorway so not too underpowered
I would appreciate your advice given this economic balance
Best wishes
Kerri Houghton, Devon, UK
Hello Kerri,
I am sure all those cars come in green. Which, coincidentally, was my favourite colour too.
Let’s skip the Aygo and Yaris because a gust of wind on the M1 will probably see them change lanes.
The VW Polo diesel blue-motion diesels are second only to Prius in claiming to be kind on the environment. In their case, because the MPG is so stonking at 60 + mpg.
The need for power on motorways and the economy are a conflict really. Try these on for size as they all do 40-50 mpg if you drive lightly:
Year Make Model Miles Low Fair
2008 Mitsubishi Colt CZ1 1.1 3 P Manual 13399 4055 5407
2006 Mazda 2 Antares 1.4 5 P Manual 22378 3975 5300
2007 Chevrolet Kalos SX 1.4 5 P Manual 17260 3765 5020

The Colt feels very solid, a sexy design and well made, so is a bit of a stand out choice given the price.
Happy motoring,
Matt
