Question

Hi,

I'm a full time mom and cashflow is tight so I'm planning to sell my Fold Galaxy and buy a smaller car which is cheaper to run.

I have 2 children and don't really need the space the Galaxy provides. Can you give me any suggestions?

Looking to spend £5-6,000 but want low running costs and safety.

Thanks.

Answer

Hi

Why not do a straight swap down to a Ford C-Max. It will give you all the things you like about the Galaxy but on a smaller scale. A 1.6 TDci from 2004 with 29,000 miles, giving you 58 MPG is about right for your needs...

Or for even better value look at Citroen Xsara Picassos. The same money buys a 2005 2.0 Hdi with similar mileage but an even better 51 MPG.

But the C-Max has a slightly better NCAP safety rating:

Child-protection
The older child was forward facing in a Britax Romer Duo Plus. The younger child sat in a rear-facing Britax Romer Baby Safe secured using the adult belt. The children’s heads were well protected in the frontal and side impacts but the head and chest loads on the 18-month-old in the frontal impact were a little high. The labelling on the restraints was clear and permanent. A pictogram (which could be peeled off) on the passenger’s end of the fascia gave the only warning against placing a rear-facing restraint opposite an airbag.

Child-protection
Citroën specified universal Römer Peggy forward-facing restraints for both children be used for testing. The 3-year-old’s head was not protected in the side or forward impacts. The younger child was protected but testers noted a high neck load that is typical of a young child in a forward-facing seat. A front passenger airbag is fitted as standard and this could cause serious, even fatal, injuries to a child placed opposite it in a rear-facing seat. But no written warning of this risk was given. In-car labels could also peel off and be lost.
