Hi
After 3 months and 4 days our Focus has developed a fault. The engine warning light is permanently on and I understand this could be a major problem.
Is there any way of knowing whether this could have been predicted/whether it is just one of those things? Also, the garage have added to the log book 'add 51,502 mileage display resetting due to new dashboar' as they have amended the figure.
Do you think this sounds dodgy? Many thanks, Vicky Riley
Answer
The engine warning light is not necessarily a major problem. It simply indicates that one or more of the engine sensors has detected something that’s not as it should be.
If the engine seems to be running OK, it’s probably something straightforward – possibly just a sensor. It can’t be predicted – most of these things are electronic and they don’t have a specific lifetime, or gradually deteriorate, they just work fully until they blow.
The Focus has a well known problem with the dash unit and the cure is normally a new dash, including the mileometer so I wouldn’t be suspicious of the log book entry either. If in any doubt you can always look back through previous MOT certificates if you have them, or contact the previous owner, whose name is on the log book.
