If you buy a BMW M3, endure the frustration of never being let out of side roads and live with the fear that someone will run their penknife down the side.
However, if you spend your £27,000 (that’s a new price of course) on a Ford Focus RS, in any of the particularly garish colours, you will find that van drivers, supped-up MG ZR* punks and even the odd Vectra Sri pilot will flash their lights at you, all beaming smiles and thumbs up. And that’s just in the first 15 minutes.
You will also revel in its blistering acceleration, beating BMWs, Audis and Integras in those short inner city sprints from traffic light to traffic light.

And here’s the bit you won’t believe. The Recarros, far from brutal racing seats are supportive and comfortable. If you just want to quietly cruise in the outside lane of the dual carriageway, your hand can lightly grip the soft-touch leather steering wheel and the RS will just hum in the back ground while you enjoy a smooth, relaxing run.
What a fine all round car. It’s just a shame I don’t want to be seen arriving at a meeting in it.

What’s the market like?
There are less than 100 of these bad boys out there. But considering the niche, that’s plenty. A less than 1 year old version with less than 10,000 miles will be less than £18,000. And they come in some great colours.
What else does this budget buy?
Around £20,000 buys a 1 year old Nissan 350Z, a four or five year old Jaguar XK, a 3 year old BMW 3-Series M Sport, or two Hyundai Coupes.
Summary
