Ford Focus TDCi Sport - Ford Focus Car Review

Review

A FEW years ago it would have been impossible to use the words "sport" and "diesel" in the same phrase.

But just to show how rapidly things are changing in the automotive world, Ford has come up with a cracker that welds the two firmly together.

Using one of the nation's best-loved cars, the engineering team from the Big Blue Oval has created a diesel sensation.

It is in the form of the Focus TDCi Sport and it is a car that really does offer the best of all worlds.

Not only can this Focus deliver a great, fun drive, it can also average more than 50 miles to the gallon.

And what makes the TDCi tick is Ford's acclaimed 1.8 litre Duratorq engine.

Made in the UK at Ford's Dagenham factory in Essex, this engine develops 113bhp and gives the Focus a real kick. Top speed is a reported 120mph and the car can sprint from standstill to 60mph in 10.8 seconds.

But it is the mid-range power that makes this particular Focus such a delight - and it has plenty.

Couple that with super handling, a smart interior and some features unique to the Focus diesel Sport, and this is a car that really stands out.

It has got exclusively designed 17 inch seven spoke alloy wheels, part leather upholstery and eye-catching metallic effect inserts in the dash. Then there is sports-tuned suspension and rally-style front seats.

At £14,995 this three-door model is at the top end of the Focus price scale, and although it comes with air conditioning, electric windows and a full set of airbags there is one amazing let down - it has not got electrically adjustable door mirrors.

Not only is that a real nuisance if more than one driver is to use the car regularly, but I cannot think of another car in this price bracket which fails to fit powered mirrors as standard.

Nevertheless the Focus Sport is a head turner. ABS and traction control are included in the price, and although there is only a five speed gearbox it is slick to use and in keeping with the image.

It is one of those cars you cannot get enough of and mile after mile it guarantees enjoyment.

Ford may have lagged behind in the diesel market but this latest generation of engines put the company up with the best in this fast growing segment of the car market.
