Hi
We have a new ford focus 1.8 tdci and at 63mph the steering wheel vibrates, similar to when the tracking is out or wheel balance is wrong. Can you advise on the problem please?
Answer
Tracking doesn’t normally cause vibration, so wheel balancing is my bet.
That said, both are easy to check and a friendly garage may do the checks free and only charge you if adjustment or balancing is needed. If both are fine, it could be a shock absorber, suspension rubber, drive shaft or even a distorted wheel. If the car’s new and still under warranty, take the service receptionist out and show him/her the problem. If they won’t come, go and collar the salesperson who dealt with you and treat them to a shaky ride!
