What model do you reconmend, i.e. what is a good buy for about £4,000 please?

This is where our magazine is so handy - I just flicked it open in the small family car section. Looked for F and at a glance I can see that your budget buys:
- 2004 2.0 Ghias with 42,000 miles
- Go for this if you like having all the luxury kit and extras. It's petrol and gives 33 mpg, in insurance group 8. Both manuals and auots are available.
- 2004 1.8 TDI
- THis diesel unit gives you 52 MPG, is not so refined, and will have about 10,000 miles more on the clock on average
At a push, if you haggle hard, you could get a 2005 revised shape car, which will lose less money. You'll have to haggle hard because the retail price is really more like £5,00 even for the smaller 1.6 petrol engine.
