What to look for:
Leave the engine on and listen for the engine misfiring (rather than the revs being constant when on idle and the engine making a consistent noise, it splutters and spits). You should also listen for a growling exhaust noise or a hissing from the top of the engine (you will need the bonnet open).
What it means:
If the car misfires and the exhaust is noisy, the metal exhaust manifold is cracked and needs replacing. If the engine is misfiring and there is a hissing noise then the plastic inlet manifold needs replacing.
What to do
