What to look for:
Check for a clanking sound under the dashboard/bottom of the engine whist the car is in motion. Check for this sound over speed bumps and in tight corners. Also look under the car where it has been parked for signs of oil dripping off the bottom of the engine (towards the back) onto the floor.
What it means:
These faults can indicate failure of the transfer box which transfers power aft to the rear wheels. Causes vary, it could be a plug or a seal or failure of the whole unit.
What to do
If the car is under warranty (3 years/60,000 miles) then Ford may replace the part for free. If not and you intend to buy the car we would strongly advise having the car inspected by a professional mechanic. Otherwise try to reduce the price of the car by £1500.00.
