ITS popularity and massive sales figures have given its drivers the superhero-style title of Mondeo Man, but what makes the super saloon so great?
It's true, the current Ford Mondeo's looks will not be met by many jaw-dropping admirers, the technology - while impressive - is not exactly rocket science and nothing about it really stands out from the crowd, but still the sales figures make for very good reading.
The reason, in my opinion is very simple - the Ford Mondeo is leaps and bounds ahead of any rival when it comes to being the 'safe' option.
Some people like to gamble, others like to play it safe. But buying a car is a very big decision and, in a day and age when time is money, endless hours wasted on breakdowns is just not an option.
Added to its incredible reliability, the Mondeo does boast some fabulous features and the top-of-the-range Titanium X model is an excellent all-round drive both in and around town and on the open road and the economy of the diesel-powered 2.2-litre engine is most impressive.
There is ample room for four adults to sit comfortably and with an impressive estate-sized boot, there is room for all their golf clubs, trolleys and much, much more.
The vast list of features that come as standard include leather seat trims, privacy glass, climate control, a great sound system and these were boosted on the test vehicle with some added extras such as park assist, roof rails, a sat nav system and Bluetooth phone pack.
Safety, as always, is exceptional on the Mondeo with a whole host of specifications to ease the mind. These include air bags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability programme, anti-whiplash front head restraints and the highly-acclaimed Intelligent Protection System which basically assesses the severity of any incident and reacts for you in a split-second to activate the best possible safety system.
In reality, the Mondeo does have it all. It performs, it is economical, it won't break the bank, it's safe and has that certain familiarity about it that makes it feel like home.
Easy then to see just why the superheroes chose the Mondeo - well, do you feel lucky?
