FORD built its reputation on value for money and now heavily underlines that with performance per pound in the shape of the Mondeo ST220.
Taking its name from the bhp figure for the latest Duratec 3.0 litre engine, the quickest car in the Mondeo stable is also one of the easiest and most rewarding to drive.
It is all part of the Ford philosophy for winning back drivers who may have left the marque when its products lost the RS badges.
The RS model is coming back too, but for now the Mondeo ST220 sits on top of the pile of Ford's performance packages.
Engineers have essentially taken the standard car, stuffed in a performance powertrain and equipped it with sharpened steering, brakes and suspension.
Inside it has been given sports treatment and fittings, and then been topped with a luxurious equipment package including a multi-disc CD player and powered everything.
It's a heady cocktail but it has the desired effect. It looks very good and it tastes sublime.
The spread of power from the engine means there's plenty of strong pull available once rolling, although it's not that smart from standstill unless you are very brutal with the throttle.
The gearchange is swift but sure, with ratios which permit rapid overtaking, but perhaps fuel economy could be improved with a sixth ratio added for cruising. As it is, even in fifth the Mondeo ST has enough power to accelerate briskly at motorway speed.
The tighter steering has improved precision without making it too heavy around town, and the brakes provide powerful stopping ability without loss of feel.
All secondary controls are well laid out, the instruments big and clear, and the heating and ventilation system is highly efficient.
Oddments room is good throughout the cabin, and the boot very large with excellent access through the fifth door, although there is still a high rear sill to overcome.
Passengers have less trouble climbing in or out and, once cocooned in the car, enjoy comfortable seats and plenty of room, even in the back. Seat adjustment is excellent and they really hold occupants in a secure manner.
Full seat belts and an airbag system which surrounds the cabin reinforce the feeling of safety.
The way the car responds further inspires confidence. It is sharp, sure and never gives cause for concern. Grip is very strong, handling accurate and there is a safe initial understeer which can be modified to a more neutral characteristic under throttle, with a fine balance under perfect control.
It is both rapid and relaxing, a sure indicator of a well sorted chassis.
Road noise is noticeable and although the engine becomes fussy under hard throttle , wind and other mechanical sources of noise are very low.
Not only is it very enjoyable to drive, but it feels very safe and is immensely versatile as well.
Looking at what it can do, and at the price at which it can do it, the Ford Mondeo ST220 is an exceptional performance family car.
