Hi
I own a 04 plate 1.8 Mondeo and the flywheel is making a knocking noise.
I have been told that it is not a solid flywheel on this model and that on these particular flywheels the rubber perishes causing the knocking. I understand that this is a common problem and that there are conversion kits available for other ford models.
Could you let me know if there is one available for the Mondeo.
Many thanks
Answer
Since it’s 04, the 1.8 engine must be petrol. These don’t normally have flywheel problems – the ones you’re talking about are dual mass flywheels and they do wear on diesels. A knocking noise is not normally a symptom either, so I think you need a bit of dismantling to find the cause. Clutch is a possibility, but so is a main bearing. If it does turn out to be the flywheel, solid replacements are often available – take the exact specification to a motor factor and they’ll tell you. (Motor factors are trade suppliers such as Brown Brothers/Partco, but they will usually sell to the public)
