What to look for:

Blue/Black Smoke from the exhaust when the engine is warm. Loss of power/sluggishness during test drive or a whistling or ‘graunching’ sound from the top of the engine whilst it is running. Open the bonnet and listen to the top of the engine to spot this.

What it means:

The turbo is blown. The blue smoke is burning oil from the blown turbo seal falling onto the front of the exhaust and igniting. It can cost up to £1200/£1500 at main dealers and £850 at a specialist. Make sure the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valve is replaced at the same time. This part can often be the cause of turbo problems on these engines.

What to do

It will be fixed under warranty if the car is less than three years old. If there is any suspicion of the turbo being blown then it would be advisable to have the vehicle professionally inspected at the vendor’s expense. Otherwise try to negotiate at least £850 off of the asking price or have the repair carried out as part of the deal.
