WHEN it comes to soft-roaders we now have a huge array to choose from and new offerings like VW's Tiguan are still arriving on the market.
But one of the best has long been the Honda CR-V and in its latest form this chunky estate is even better than before.
It drives very easily and is less unwieldy to handle in tighter spaces than some of the others.
And it gives more to an enthusiastic driver than most others too, with a good feel through corners and plenty of grip.
The 2.2-litre turbo diesel I drove uses a lot less juice but, with the difference in petrol and diesel prices, it may not be worth paying the extra £1,100 over the excellent 2.0-litre petrol model.
The ride can be firm but is rarely uncomfortable and the engine pulls willingly from low revs, making it just as quick as the petrol.
It can't match the Land Rover Freelander off-road but how many of those ever see the rough stuff?
Interior
There is plenty of space for five in comfort and a big boot into the bargain. Build quality is excellent throughout and safety is right up there with the very best.
All but the base model have plenty of kit and although dealers are expensive, running costs are low because you rarely need to go there.
