REVISED outside, inside and underneath, the Honda S2000 roadster is now better than ever able to take on its German and British rivals and comfortably outpace them on value.
Honda always had a good car trying to get out of the cushy confines of the S2000 chassis and it has now made it more of a driver's car than it has ever been.
Not only is it visually sharper front and back, but inside it has a new facia, steering wheel, console and door linings, with leather and silver trim detailing.
Under the sleek skin are modified suspension, brakes, powertrain and steering, so it's altogether sharper and better handling while remaining very smooth over nearly all surfaces.
As it's more desirable than ever, Honda has also significantly upgraded the anti-theft system.
This is a genuine roomy two-seater sports car with one of the fastest folding hoods on any convertible and one which shuts down firmly to exclude any water or wind penetration. Top down it's blissfully calm as well and only the busy engine note lets you know how hard it's pulling you along.
The powertrain is very performance focused, delivering rapid pickup, rifle-bolt precision through the box and truly relaxed motorway cruising when required.
It steers and stops with incredible precision as well, making it a delight to drive in town as well as country. It is entirely safe and surefooted in any conditions and over any surface.
Some surfaces will jiggle the occupants, particularly if going slowly, but generally it absorbs the bumps with composure and comfort thanks to the small but well shaped and supporting seats. Adjustment range was good but it might be a very tight squeeze for anyone over 6ft.
The increased oddments space in the cabin is welcome and while the small boot is barely big enough for two medium cases or a generous trip to the supermarket, it would be fine for a weekend away if you packed very carefully.
Visibility is enhanced with new headlights and good wipers whwich sweep the screen well and there are no real blindspots.
A busy engine note at high revs and some road rumbles intrude but there is little wind or transmission noise in the cabin.
What really sets the Honda S2000 apart from rivals is its perfectly laid out driving position, the relationship and feel of its controls and the "rightness" of the experience.
It responds very well to everything the driver does and it behaves in a very predictable and safe manner, and what's more it does so with saloon-like comfort and composure.
The S2000 really is an exceptionally fine, modern two-seater sports car which looks up to date and does not rely on retro-style to sell itself.
