Hello,
I am about to buy my first car at 35 years old as I now have 2 children and need a car for school runs, work and just a few trips to town. My budget is between £2000 and £3000 and I’d prefer something economical. I am considering a Hyundai Getz, 07’ registered but with 87,000 on the clock. It’s priced at £3,489. I think this car is about £1000 over its average market price. How much should I expect to pay? I am confused as I don’t know much about cars and wonder what other cars I could get with my budget. It has to be automatic and preferably a hatchback.
Many thanks,
Joanne.
Answer
Hello Joanne
Congratulations on your first car!
We would say that the Hyundai Getz you are considering is about £1200 over it’s fair price and so best avoided. For the kind of money you intend to spend you really ought to consider mid-sized hatchbacks from the mainstream manufacturers. The Vauxhall Astra is a very safe bet. You can get a 1.6 petrol well within your budget, with an automatic gearbox and air-con. Like this one…

It’s a perfect school run car, as is its traditional rival the Ford Focus, which is available in similar low miles spec. Check this one out…

When buying on a budget for everyday use, the more common the car, the better. Also consider the slightly smaller Fiesta…
