KOREAN car makers are really catching up with those in Europe and Japan.
The latest Hyundai is the i20, which replaced the unassuming Getz supermini and in 1.4 Comfort form, is well up with the class-leading Ford Fiesta in almost every way and about £2,000 cheaper.
In one way it's far better, because it comes with a five year, unlimited mileage warranty and that's one of the best in the business.
It has positive and informative power steering that helps towards very good handling and it feels great through corners with plenty of grip and excellent balance.
Body roll is not too bad and low weight means it feels nimble and surefooted.
The ride is composed, soaking up bumps and potholes well above 25-30 miles an hour. Under that speed though, it feels every ripple of the much patched surfaces on so many town roads.
The five-speed gearbox is positive and easy with a light clutch and the smooth engine is zippy and willing but with more power at the top of the rev range than the bottom.
Interior
This model comes with steering wheel stereo controls, four electric windows, height adjustment for drivers' seat and height and reach for the column.
It has electric mirrors, air conditioning and remote locking and, unusually for a small car, it has decent rear legroom and a good boot.
