WHEN Jaguar took the plunge and introduced a diesel engine option for its flagship XJ saloon it probably didn't envisage it would be such a success.
It was a move which just a few years ago wouldn't even have been considered.
Jaguar, after all, was renowned for its excellent petrol power packs and the thought of a diesel engine powering the XJ was anathema to some Jaguar enthusiasts.
But the gamble has paid off and the Jaguar can confidently compete against the likes of Mercedes, BMW, Lexus and Audi in the diesel luxury car sector.
UK sales to the end of October this year hit 2,030, with 58 per cent of buyers opting for the V6 diesel version. Global sales were at 10,256, with 22 per cent going for the oil-burner.
The 2.7 TDVi twin turbo, which is also used in the Jaguar S-Type and Range Rover Sport, is to my mind probably one of the best in the world.
It is so refined and smooth running it is hard to believe it isn't a petrol engine under the bonnet. Power flows seamlessly through to the wheels and even on tick-over there is no diesel knock.
And with a claimed 35mpg on a combined run the XJ diesel is no fuel gulper, which executive drivers who pile on the miles will appreciate.
With its all-aluminium body dramatically cutting down on weight, but adding rigidity to its sleek body, ride and handling is top drawer.
Fitted with air springs and computerised damping the big Jaguar eats up bumps and potholes and maintains excellent balance on all surfaces.
You can chose comfort or sports settings at the push of a button and because the XJ is also fitted with the latest electronic traction control, adaptive damping and pin-sharp steering, cornering is easy and secure with little body roll.
Producing 204bhp the V6 diesel-powered saloon will accelerate to 62mph in just 8.2 seconds and has a top speed of 141mph.
The XJ is fitted with a slick, six-speed automatic transmission system. Most of the time I just set it in drive and let the machine get on with it, but you have the choice to use it manually.
The driving experience is one to be savoured.
Surrounded by the superbly finished wood and leather interior and plenty of head and legroom for all occupants the experience is pleasurable.
Seats up front can be adjusted to suit anyone, regardless of size and shape, and I found all-round vision easy to attain.
Lack of good boot space used to be a problem on previous XJs, but the latest model offers more capacity and would swallow a decent amount of items.
The Sport version, which has an on the road price of £51,020, has a host of driving aids and comfort features, including navigation unit, audio and cassette, front and rear parking sensors, rain sensitive wipers, CD autochanger, cruise control, heated front seats, all-leather seats, Bluetooth connectivity, immobiliser, remote central locking, heated mirrors, air conditioning and electric parking brake.
Safety is paramount in the XJ and Big Cat passengers in the front are protected by six airbags, while those in the rear have curtain airbags. There are ISOfix anchor points in the rear seats for child seats.
The sleek and comfortable XJ is a class act and the diesel version must be high on the list if you are looking for an executive motor car which offers you performance and reasonable running costs.
