Monitor the temperature gauge throughout the test drive. If it starts to climb above the middle of its range, stop the car. Wear protective gloves and take car not to touch any hot parts of the engine, feel the hose at the top of the radiator whilst the engine is revved to see if it expands.
What it means:
On a XJ, these symptoms are usually caused by a water pump failure.

When the engine is running, open the bonnet and listed for a metallic rattle or loud squeaking noise.
What it means:
These noises can be caused by depleted oil reserves, or can indicate that the tappets need replacing or the chain and tensioner need replacing.
What to do
