JEEP is about to introduce a limited number of special versions of its Cherokee, called the Extreme Sport, in a bid to create a more purposeful image for the vehicles.
There will be just 200 of the Cherokee Extreme Sport models, with 16 inch alloy wheels and extended wheelarches, bumpers and front grille in high-gloss graphite.
A choice of two engines is available - the torquey 2.8-litre common rail diesel or the powerful 3.7-litre V6 petrol. Both come with an automatic gearbox, which is a five-speed affair on the CRD, but just four-speed on the V6.
The 148 bhp 2.8 CRD accelerates from 0-60 mph in 12.5 seconds with a top speed of just under 110mph, and an economy figure of 27mpg on the combined cycle.
The 3.7 V6's 208 bhp takes the car from 0-60 mph in 10.8 seconds and continues to 112 mph. It averages 20 mpg on the combined cycle.
Standard safety and security equipment on both vehicles includes driver and front passenger airbags, height adjustable front seat belts, a high-level rear brake light, locking fuel filler cap and a category 1 alarm and immobiliser.
A leather wrapped steering wheel, trip computer, height adjustable steering column, auxiliary power socket and six speaker CD/radio/cassette are among other standard features.
Prices are £21,880 on-the-road for the 2.8 CRD and £20,880 for the 3.7 V6.
Meanwhile, Jeep has further upgraded its popular Grand Cherokee range for 2004 model year with a new front appearance and specification detail changes. The stunning 4x4 has been given a freshened look with the addition of vertical grille bars and new front driving lamps.
New door mirrors have been introduced to further reduce wind noise and a new colour - Deep Lava Red - is added.
