Check that the engine management light comes on with the ignition and goes out a few seconds after you start the engine.
What it means:
If the car has been used sparingly and in town the engine warning light can come on simply through lack of use of the engine. If the engine management light doesn’t come on with the ignition, it may have burnt out or have been removed to hide a bigger fault.
What to do
Take the car for a test drive. A sustained high speed run should cause the light to go out. If so, negotiate a £100 discount or if the car is at a main dealer insist on an engine diagnostic as part of the deal. If the light stays on after the test drive then insist on the diagnostic before you buy the car.
