Cruising down the bypass at the weekend I saw something I don’t think I have seen before. A Kia had broken down. I’ve seen almost every other car break down, but Kia and Hyundai always seem to just go.
Of course, it doesn’t matter if they don’t as you are unlikely to foot the bill. Both brands come with long guarantees. Now they are getting the hang of attractive design too, it is worth giving them a second look when going to buy used. Here are three worth thinking about before everyone else catches on and prices rise:
Kia Sedona
A great big friendly people carrier that always cost less. Easy to live with and easily takes seven. Proving popular on the used market so be careful what you pay.
Most economical: 2.9CRDI 36.2mpg
Best used buy: Improved from 2001, at least SX spec.
Buy from: car dealers who have more realistic prices.

Used Car Expert magazine guide price: A 2.9 CRDi from 2003 will be around £7,744 with 47,000 miles
Hyundai Santa Fe
The new one looks much better but the old shape has good qualities too. You will find it a well equipped and easy to live with 4 x 4. Fine around town, although engines are a little thirsty. As ever low image badge means lower prices.
Most economical: 2.0 TD 37.2mpg
Best used buy: 2.7V6 least popular, but has leather and everything.
Buy from: Hyundai dealers and private owners.

Hyundai Coupe
Very pretty, good for cruising if not hard driving. Interior feels cheap, but overall a great value package and who cares about the badge?
Most economical: 1.6 34mpg
Best used buy: 2.0 SE, also F2 limited editions.
Buy from: Hyundai dealers, specialist sports car dealers and private sellers.
