THE Kia Sorento is almost up to the best large off-roaders but with prices that are a good deal lower.
I have a real soft spot for the big 4x4, which is hugely capable, very economical in turbo diesel form and reasonably comfortable.
For the majority of drivers who never take their off-roader anywhere near the rough stuff, it’s a much cheaper alternative to the Mitsubishi Shogun or Land Rover Discovery and it’s still very capable off-road too.
A marvellous high driving position gives a superb view over surrounding traffic and hedgerows.
The 2.5-litre turbo diesel is reasonably smooth and has plenty of pull, although it is a little slow to get going from low revs. There is also a 3.5-litre V6 petrol automatic but it’s a bit thirsty.
The diesel is not the quietest on the market but is still better than some and has more than acceptable performance.
It typically rolls in the corners just like most other 4x4s, but holds the road surprisingly well despite that.
Externally, there’s loads of chrome trim, 18 inch alloys and privacy glass for all the rear windows – something I think is dangerous on any car.
Interior
Inside, XS trim brings real luxury including leather and climate control, plus sat nav and an excellent stereo. Add that to the cost of the opposition and see how much you’ll pay.
