COMPETITION in the luxury saloon sector is fierce with BMW, Jaguar, Audi and Mercedes et al offering the sort of quality models that middle management and discerning private buyers are looking for.
So how will Lexus's new IS model stack up against the opposition?
Judging from my experience behind the wheel of the stylish new IS 250 SE-L Automatic it can be confident of gaining new conquests.
It's classy looking, drives extremely well and has all the hallmarks of quality we have come to expect from Lexus with an extremely comfortable cabin built with care and precision using the best of materials.
The original IS was launched in the UK in 1999 and the second edition is a step forward in many ways.
Lexus has always filled its car with loads of equipment as standard and they are the sort of features which many of its competitors only offer as expensive optional extras.
This car came with climate control, cruise control, a six-slot CD changer, alloys, parking sensors, 13-speaker audio system, push-button start, rain sensing windscreen wipers, keyless entry system, front window de-icer, climate control aircon, one-touch windows and power rear screen blind.
Added goodies included a paddle gearchange system - one of the smoothest I've come across - and a very accurate satellite navigation system with a large screen which also doubles as a rear view parking monitor.
Powered by a new direct-injection 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine which develops 204bhp the Lexus IS 250 can accelerate to 62mph in 8.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 141mph.
The power is delivered smoothly and seamlessly through a six-speed automatic transmission which is a £1,000 option. The close ratio system features steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts for sequential manual gear selection and delivers superior fuel economy - 31mpg combined.
Ride and handling is up to Lexus's usual high standard. The latest IS has new double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension systems which cuts out any hint of jarring even on the roughest surfaces.
Steering is precise and there is plenty of feel coming through the wheel to satisfy those who like to think they are in control. Though, truth be told, with the vast amount of electronic traction, braking and stability devices under the skin the Lexus itself is really in control.
Driving aids include ABS with brake assist system, electronic brakeforce distribution, vehicle stability control and traction control.
Cabin space in the front is excellent and the driving position is good with all-round vision up to scratch. But rear-seat passengers with long legs may find it a bit of a squeeze
The new Lexus IS shares the same luxury saloon platform as the latest generation GS. It is 175mm longer and 75mm wider than its predecessor, with front and rear track increased 40mm.
This is a quality car which Lexus must be excited about and it is a Japanese masterpiece which deserves to eat into this sector of the market.
Outstanding quality, smart if understated good looks, an extremely high equipment level and excellent fit and finish put the new Lexus IS in a good position to hit its sales target of 7,400 this year.
