What to look for:

1) Check that the engine management light comes on with the ignition and goes out a few seconds after you start the engine. If the engine management light doesn’t come on with the ignition, it may have burnt out or have been removed to hide a bigger fault.2) Once the engine is warm, stop the car and leave it running for a few moments. Look at the rev counter and check that the revs remain steady at around 1,000 rpm.

What it means:

If the engine management light (or the ‘VSC’ or ‘TRC’ symbols) stay on and/or the revs fluctuate rather than stay steady at approximately, 1,000 rpm, there is usually a problem with a sensor. The most common sensors to fail are the oxygen sensor or cam sensor.

What to do

Have a diagnostic check completed at a Lexus garage. Budget £50 for the check and £200 for sensor.
