THE Lotus Elise is absolutely stunning to drive - a revelation in how good a car's handling and road holding can be.
The first time I drove one was on a circuit and before I'd finished one lap I knew it was one of the best sports cars I had ever driven.
On road or track it is marvellous, with amazing handling, brilliant road holding, the most superb balance and an excellent modified MG F engine mounted behind the seats and driving the rear wheels.
The basic series was up-dated in 2000, with revised wheels, tyres and suspension, new headlights and tail-lights, and a more user-friendly interior to cater for the many owners who use their cars every day.
The hood was also redesigned to be easier to use, and the result is the finest small sportscar in the world.
Acceleration is extraordinary, considering the standard engine only produces 120bhp. It's only marginally slower than a Porsche 911 and more powerful versions are even quicker.
Interior
After 2000, more padding helped seat comfort over longer journeys - which was not bad in the first place - and there is more storage space and soundproofing.
Comfort is better than any sportscar has a right to and all are easy to drive but never cheap.
