CLEVER new technology has made sure that the first hybrid model from Lotus sounds like a sports car as well as looking like one.
Electronic sound synthesis creates engine noise to help make pedestrians aware that the petrol-electric version of the Evora is approaching.
It also generates engine noise inside the cabin to increase driver satisfaction in a model that can operate in near silence.
Designed to highlight how engineers at the famous Norfolk firm are able to harness electric and hybrid technology without detracting from the character of the Evora, the model is the centrepiece of the Lotus stand at the Geneva Motor Show.
Two electric motors drive each of the rear wheels of the 414PS model. Power comes from a lithium polymer battery pack and additional range is provided by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine linked with another piece of advanced technology to simulate a seven-speed, paddle-shift transmission.

According to the firm, the sound technology offers a choice of four noises to generate engine sounds through the audio system.
It also generates sound on the outside of the vehicle through front and rear speakers to provide a warning to increase pedestrian safety – an important factor with electric and hybrid vehicles that can be difficult to hear at slower speeds.
