The recently released Renault Laguna coupe is surprisingly stylish, with a rear end to rival an Alfa Romeo. But at a minimum of £21,000 from new it needs to be more than pretty. There is a lot that is fabulous about it – the cruise, the economy, the gadgets – but a few things that are not quite good enough. The main problem being the handling.
But, wait 18 months and the thumping early depreciation will reduce the price to a level where the flaws seem petty. Suddenly a bad car becomes a great car. This happens at different ages with different motors, but there are loads of examples of cars that weren’t quite good enough to justify their early price. Which means that they are now under-valued used deals, just waiting for you to find them. Like these three:

2008 Mazda 5
Good looking, practical and with a very flexible interior. Overalll a very classy and practical package which mainly holds its value well. 2.0 petrol has plenty of power but is much less popular so prices are volatile.
Most economical: 2.0 D
UsedCarExpert magazine price advice: The 2.0 P Sport model, being top of the range is around £16,000, even as a nearly new car. But it will lose 12-36% and be £12,000 - £10,000 depending on how desperate the seller is.
2008 Alfa Romeo
Imagine all the good things about the 156 wrapped up in one of the sexiest skins seen on UK roads and you have Alfa's GT. Mainly bought by company car drivers almost all of those on the used market are diesel. So when you find a petrol it is an opportunity.
Most economical: 1.9 16v JTD
UsedCarExpert magazine price advice: The GT JTS (petrol) is £20,000 when new, but you can pick up 12-18 month old cars for 23-33% off, which can mean as low as £12,000.
2008 Vauxhall Astra
The Astra is a major step forward with lots of clever technology. Strong engines, space and sharp handling make it a good alternative to the Focus. But the petrol Turbos are too fruity for most so prices are soft.
Most economical: 1.7 CDTi 58mpg
UsedCarExpert magazine price advice: The 16v petrol Turbos can drop in their first year from prices of £18,000 and £20,000 to as low £12,000 which is nearly 51%.
