THE new Mazda CX-7 is a car for all reasons, with hugely improved fuel consumption over its petrol predecessor thanks to a 2.2-litre diesel engine.
There is just the one model to choose from and it will supposedly reach 37 miles per gallon together with fair emissions for a 4x4 of 199g/km.
Top speed from the punchy and powerful 172PS diesel is a claimed 124mph while it gets from 0-60mph in 11.3 seconds.
It is more expensive than the model it replaces at £25,785 but nonetheless makes a much more attractive proposition for business buyers.
It has chunky good looks, with an angular front grille, pronounced air scoops and bulbous wheel arches over big alloys and huge tyres.
Acceleration is smooth and swift helped by a six speed manual gearbox but there is no automatic option.
An active four-wheel-drive system moves the power from front to rear according to the conditions so you should rarely have traction problems.
But it is tuned for the road and has no pretence of being a full blown off-roader even though it can handle moderately rough surfaces.
Interior
It comes very well equipped, including sat nav, climate control, bluetooth and audio connections plus a rear parking camera.
Height and reach adjust steering and electric adjustment for the leather driver's seat make for excellent comfort and multi-function controls for navigation, audio and trip computer are sited on the steering wheel.
