What to look for:

During the test drive check that the car's acceleration is smooth and progressive. There shouldn't be any blips or jumps in the acceleration.

What it means:

If the acceleration is not smooth, the problem is often the catalytic converter. Owners often press the accelerator when starting the car and on earlier (2003/2004) models this flooded the engine and catalytic converter. When the car has started, the fuel burns off but damages the catalytic converter.

What to do

Have a garage inspect the car. Ask if a modification has been completed to stop the flooding.
